HOLY WEEK 2010
The great
week of the Christian Year begins today, Passion (Palm)
Sunday
Jesus rides
into Jerusalem to the cry “Hosanna
to the Son of David” But how quickly
things change. Isn’t life like this for us at
times? As a society we have been experiencing some of
this in economic terms. Personally, too, it can happen:
our plans are going smoothly – everything is fine
– then our world comes tumbling down. We can identify
with those first disciples of Jesus in their confusion
as the events of this week unfold, and we renew our
faith that for us, too, the light of Easter will finally
shine through every difficulty,
as we trust completely in the God and Father of Jesus.

Other Opportunities for confession,
Castleblayney
Sun 6pm; Latton Mon 8.20pm, Lough Egish Tue 8pm.
Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday of Holy Week are low-key
days, but personally we can make them days of deep devotion
by attending Mass St Patrick’s Mon 7.15am, 8pm;
Tue and Wed 7.15 and 9.30am or in some other way.
The
Easter Triduum
The Easter Triduum
(=three days) is celebrated from the evening of Holy
Thursday until Easter Sunday evening. This extended
celebration offers people of faith a life-giving share
in Christ’s Passover through death to risen life,
what we call his Paschal Mystery.
The celebration
is marked by three special liturgies: The Mass of the
Lord’s Supper on Holy Thursday evening, with its
themes of service (the gospel of the washing of the
feet and the Trocaire Collection) and the gift of the
Eucharist; The Celebration of the Lord’s Passion
on Good Friday in a unique liturgy, “austere but
never sad”, which ponders the saving death of
the Lord; and The Vigil of Easter Night with the proclamation
of Christ’s resurrection from the tomb and of
our rising with him from sin to the new life of grace.
But there is more
to this celebration than liturgies. In the Triduum,
the penitential fast of Lent gives way to The Paschal
Fast, which is to be kept sacred by all on Good Friday
and, if possible, prolonged through Holy Saturday, so
that we may come to the joy of the Sunday of the Resurrection
with ready and uplifted hearts.
Make
Holy Week A Special Week
Let each one of
us join as earnestly as we can in celebrating this great
week. What can we do? We can set aside a little extra
time for prayer and reflection on the mystery of what
Jesus has done for us. We might ponder the Passion of
Jesus by making our way thoughtfully around on the Stations
of the Cross in one of our churches, or by reflecting
on them at home perhaps with the aid of a booklet. We
could pray the Sorrowful Mysteries of the Rosary, alone
or as a family. We should all make an effort at some
special form of self-denial offered in union with the
Passion of Jesus. And we could try to make a point of
attending the Liturgies of the Easter Triduum in a spirit
of prayer and reollection.
Thur Apr
9th The Chrism Mass: Bishop Duffy will bless
the Holy Oils for use in the Sacraments during the coming
year at the special Chrism Mass in St. Macartan’s
Cathedral at 11.00am. Parishioners from every parish
are welcome to attend.

Trócaire
Offerings: The giving of alms for the poor
and needy has been traditionally associated with the
celebration of Holy Thursday. Please empty your Trócaire
Boxes, convert the contents to notes as far as possible,
and bring along the proceeds to the Holy Thursday Mass,
where they will be carried in the Procession of Gifts.
There is a Holy Thursday envelope in your box for Trócaire.
If you do not attend on Holy Thursday, please drop your
Trócaire envelope into the Easter Sunday Collection.
There will be no collection on Good Friday.
THE EASTER
TRIDUUM - HOLY THURSDAY
6 pm Mass
in Our Lady of the Rosary, Tullycorbet &
in Our Lady of Knock, Ballintra
St. Patrick’s
– 8.00pm Evening Mass of the Lord’s
Supper, with the Washing of the Feet, and procession
of the Blessed Sacrament to the Altar of Repose. Silent
Adoration will continue until 11.00pm. We remember Jesus’
own words to his disciples on the first Holy Thursday:
“Wait here and keep awake with me.”

Sick & Housebound: In order to
enable the sick and housebound to join spiritually with
the Holy Week Liturgies in our churches, Eucharistic
Ministers will bring Holy Communion to them after the
masses in each area on Holy Thursday evening. If others
who are not on the First Friday lists wish to be included
in this arrangement, their names should be given to
the Parish Office by Tuesday.
GOOD FRIDAY
From ancient times, today has been a solemn Day of Fast
& Abstinence for Christian believers. Let us each
resolve to keep the Good Friday fast as deeply as we
can.
Celebration of the Lord’s Passion: 3.00pm &
7.30pm Mass is not celebrated on Good Friday.
The liturgy has three parts: Liturgy of the Word with
the Passion reading and Solemn Prayers; Veneration of
the Cross and Holy Communion.
HOLY SATURDAY
No Mass or other
sacraments are celebrated today except Confessions will
be heard in St Patrick’s 12 noon -12.30. No evening
confessions today. Easter Vigil 9pm.
