21st Sunday in Ordinary Time – Sunday, 22nd August 2010
...Fr. Johnny Doherty, C.Ss.R.

Jesus said: “There are those now last who will be first, and those now first who will be last”. One of the basic needs of the human person is to be successful. The fulfilment of this need brings people in all kinds of directions in life. Some people invest themselves in work and their whole self-worth is associated with how successful they are there. Then they have to retire! For others it is found in the kind of home they have, or their popularity, or in sport etc. All of these are good things but when they become our reason for being able to say, “I am the best” they have led us astray. The way of Jesus puts being successful in love as our priority. Through love we put our beloved as number one whether that beloved is our wife/husband, our children, our community, and in so far as we do that we live with great peace and joy and inherit eternal life.

Most Reverend Liam S. MacDaid DD

Bishop of Clogher.

The ordination ceremony has been well documented and reported by the media, particularly the Northern Standard. There were many memorable moments throughout the ceremony but none more so than when the new Bishop addressed the following words to the people of the diocese.

My dear priests and people of Clogher there are two symbols which I wish to recall from to-days ceremony- the laying on of Hands(symbol of the guiding Spirit of God) and of the book of the Gospels (the Word of God). Let us embrace these gifts and make our way together to the well of salvation.

There we are assured we will find living water which will nourish the spirit as well as the body. It will be water which we can safely offer our children; water which will protect our universe as well as enriching the quality of our lives and leading us to everlasting life. In the words of to-day’s Gospel; anyone who wants to be great among you must be your servant, and anyone who wants to be first among you must be your slave, just as the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.

Prayer card available at masses this weekend.
